Zelda and Zion are both not only our personal protection where we live off grid in No Man's Land, but they are Livestock Guardians, and Emotional Support for other animals we have rescued and provide sanctuary for, as well as for those animals that are fostered, or re-homed.
They are accustomed to being around all kinds of livestock and small animals, and they are smart, sensitive, and gentle enough that they can be trusted to go inside of the chicken and duck coops and help us gently herd livestock, even with baby chicks and ducklings present.
They also are exceptionally intelligent and understand most conversations they are around. They know approximately 40 different commands, including but not limited to:
Sit, Shake (both paws), Down, Stay, Inside, Up, Come, Go Check, and more.
We believe in choice, and leave it up to the future home of the puppy.
Many believe it is in the best interest of the Doberman Pinscher to have the standard ear cropping procedure done as it can deter ear infections by making it easier and more accessible to clean the ears.
Also since Dobermans were bred to protect humans - whether you want them to protect you or not this is inherit in their nature - many feel that the natural, floppy ears do a disservice to the breed, as they can be targets to grab hold of and cause harm to the dog by a tentative assailant.
For this reason, it is not recognized simply as a cosmetic procedure by the AKC, but to insure the safety of Dobermans.
Aesthetically speaking, many believe that the natural, floppy ears, give a more goofy, adorable, less serious demeanor and impression of the dog, whereas the regal, upright cropped ears give the dog a more fierce, alert, and serious impression with the breed. People are quicker to recognize the breed when the tail is docked and ears are cropped.
Tail docking is relatively painless since it is done within the first three to five days after the puppies are born and the nerves have yet to fully develop to recognize the pain.
The opposite is true and pain is definitely felt in adult Dobermans who suffer from "Happy Tail" syndrome, having natural tails (not docked at three to five days of age).
"Happy Tail" syndrome is when a dog causes damage to their tail by wagging it and striking hard surfaces (thus why it is nicknamed "Happy Dog syndrome").
The tail of the Doberman Pinscher breed is fragile by nature and they are especially prone to "Happy Dog" syndrome.
When this happens, they will have to undergo anesthesia and amputation and it is extremely painful as their nerves are fully developed by this point.
We do not keep the tails natural for this very reason, and dock them when they are but a few days old.
While the tail docking is relatively pain-free because of the age at which it is performed on the puppy, the ear cropping is not so simple and straight-forward.
We aren't going to lie to you like competitor breeders will and tell you that the ear cropping and aftercare is painless for your puppy. This is simply not true. It is painful, they are sedated for the procedure and are put on pain meds for some time after.
We take our puppies to the very best in our vicinity, which for us is Quartz Mountain Animal Hospital. They do a state-of-the-art laser surgery, which is the cleanest, and best kind of ear cropping you can do for your puppy.
We bring the puppy in for several follow-up appointments including to have the ear sutures removed, and regularly check to be sure no infection is present. Once the vet gives us the green light, we begin the taping and posting to insure your puppy's ears are done correctly and stand-up as they should.
We understand that surgically modifying a dog in any way is highly controversial, which is why we leave the choice of ear cropping up to the family adopting, but we do endorse and condone both tail docking and ear cropping, so long as it is done ethically by a skilled professional with proper after care.
At Eden's Fruit Ranch we have a very thorough screening process.
We will not discuss reserving or delivering one of our puppies unless the following criteria are met:
1. You email us at [email protected] and fill out our brief questionnaire.
2. You pass our background check.
3. You make a deposit via Zelle per our instructions in email to officially reserve your puppy and remove them from available puppies listed for adoption.
Only then will we reach the point of conversation of meeting to deliver your puppy.
One of the reasons that we do a questionnaire and run background checks on prospective homes, is because these dogs are like a loaded gun. In the wrong hands they are very dangerous and a liability.
These are working dogs, not just born and raised in a traditional home setting, but heavily socialized in a diverse environment of animals on our animal rescue sanctuary that includes chickens, ducks, rabbits, cats, other dogs, a wolf-dog, a turtle and more. When you adopt one of our puppies, you are not adopting a pet, you are adopting a new member of your family.
Thank you for your consideration in providing the best possible home for one of our puppies!

There are several great options to feed your Doberman. Our dogs love Rancher's Choice Active Dog formula, but the most important recommendation we can give is to avoid feeding your Doberman grain-free food and a grain-free diet. There is actually scientific evidence that links grain-free foods to increased chance of heart problems in large dogs, and Dobermans already have a predisposition to develop heart problems, so avoiding grain-free foods is a good preventative measure to take to avoid exacerbating a potential problem later.
Why We Recommend Avoiding Grain-Free Food At All Costs
Many dogs who developed dilated cardiomyopathy were eating grain-free diets containing high levels of legumes on their ingredient lists. The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released a statement in 2019 that they are investigating the relationship between a dog’s diet and DCM. They reported that dogs fed primarily with grain-free dry kibble have higher rates of cardiac abnormality. This correlation, however, does not mean grain-free food is the cause of heart disease. There are many other contributing variables.Another thing to keep in mind, is similar to us humans, it is not good for your Doberman to be super active directly following a meal. For this reason in our shopping recommendation list above we include a variety of puzzle toys to encourage your Doberman to eat slower.
